Overview

Slovan Liberec in brief

Slovan Liberec was formed on 12 July 1958, when the Liberec clubs Jiskra and Slavoj merged. Football in the city is older. The German Reichenberger Fussballklub was founded in 1899, and the first Czech club, SK Liberec, followed in 1919 and was renamed Slavia Liberec in 1934. Liberec had a German majority until 1945, and Czech football there stopped for seven years after the city was annexed in 1938. The club plays in blue and white, the colours of Liberec, and its crest shows Jested mountain and its television tower. Home games are played at Stadion U Nisy, which holds 9,900.

For decades Slovan moved between the second and third tiers, and in 1963 it dropped as far as the regional league. In 1993 it won a place in the new Czech First League and has played every season of it since. Slovan won the Czech Cup in 2000. In 2001-02 it became the first Czech champion from outside Prague, and in the same season it reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals before Borussia Dortmund knocked it out. Further league titles came in 2005-06 under Vitezslav Lavicka and in 2011-12 under Jaroslav Silhavy. A second Czech Cup followed in 2015.
