Overview
Valerenga in brief
Valerenga, commonly known as Enga, are a football club from Oslo and part of the multi-sport club Valerengens IF. The club traces its roots to 29 July 1913, when a group of teenage factory workers founded Idrettslaget Spring; a year later it took the name of Valerenga, the working-class neighbourhood on the east side of the city where it was based. Since 1914 the team have worn blue and red, after buying a cheap set of surplus kits from the Norwegian State Railways. After decades at Bislett and Ullevaal, Valerenga moved in September 2017 into their own stadium, Intility Arena, at Valle Hovin in east Oslo.
Valerenga have won five Norwegian league titles, in 1965, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 2005, and four Norwegian Football Cups, in 1980, 1997, 2002 and 2008, and were cup runners-up in 1983 and 1985. The 2005 title, settled by a single point on the final day, ended Rosenborg's 13-year run as champions. The club have also had spells in the second tier, winning the First Division in 1997, 2001 and 2024. In Europe their best run came in the 1998-99 Cup Winners' Cup, when they knocked out Rapid Bucharest and Besiktas before losing to Chelsea in the quarter-finals; they also reached the third round of the 2003-04 UEFA Cup.

Valerenga's arch-rivals are Lyn, their fellow Oslo club. The rivalry grew out of the city's social divide: Valerenga drew players and supporters from east-end workers, while Lyn and Frigg were linked with academia and the upper classes, and the two clubs fought out the 1965 title race until the final matches. Lillestrom, HamKam, Kongsvinger and Brann are also counted among the main rivals. Notable figures include Einar Bruno Larsen, the club's record scorer with 99 goals, and Leif Eriksen, one of the 1960s Bohemians who later coached the 1981 title side. Kjetil Rekdal had two spells as the club's head coach.
