Overview

Vancouver Whitecaps in brief

Vancouver Whitecaps FC were founded on 18 March 2009, when Major League Soccer named Vancouver its 17th team, and began MLS play in 2011. The Whitecaps name, a nod to the snow-capped mountains and the waves of the Pacific, began with the city's North American Soccer League club of 1974 and was revived by the Vancouver 86ers, who played as the Whitecaps from 2001. Greg Kerfoot, their owner from 2002, led the group that won the MLS place. After most of the first MLS season at Empire Field, the team moved to BC Place in October 2011.

The original Whitecaps won Soccer Bowl '79 against Tampa Bay Rowdies, the 86ers took four straight Canadian Soccer League titles from 1988 to 1991, and the second-division Whitecaps won the USL First Division in 2006 and 2008. In MLS, the club has won the Canadian Championship five times, in 2015 and each year from 2022 to 2025. The 2025 side also reached the CONCACAF Champions Cup final, lost 5-0 to Cruz Azul, and won a first Western Conference title before a 3-1 defeat by Inter Miami in MLS Cup.
