Overview

Los Angeles FC in brief

Los Angeles FC were founded on 30 October 2014, when MLS awarded a new team to the city after Chivas USA folded, and played their first season in 2018. The ownership group has included Peter Guber, Magic Johnson, Will Ferrell and Mia Hamm. The club plays in black and gold at BMO Stadium in Exposition Park, opened in 2018 as Banc of California Stadium on the site of the old Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. Its supporters' union, The 3252, is named after the capacity of the stadium's safe-standing section.

LAFC won the Supporters' Shield in their second season, 2019, with a then-record 72 points, as Carlos Vela scored 34 league goals and was named MVP. In 2022 they won the Shield and MLS Cup double, beating the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in which Gareth Bale equalised deep into extra time. The 2024 U.S. Open Cup followed, won 3-1 after extra time against Sporting Kansas City. LAFC also lost CONCACAF Champions League finals to Tigres in 2020 and Leon in 2023.
