Overview

Asteras Tripolis in brief

Asteras Tripolis was founded on 26 March 1931 near the railway station in Tripoli, Arcadia, but the club soon went inactive. In 1932 all of the town's clubs were temporarily dissolved. In 1938 Minas Tsavdaris moved the players of his unrecognised club Keramikos to Asteras, which revived it. The club was re-formed as Neos Asteras in 1947, merged into Athlitikos Omilos Tripolis in 1963 and was refounded in 1978. It plays in blue and yellow, which gives it the nickname Kitrinoble (yellow-blues). Its home is the Theodoros Kolokotronis Stadium, built in 1979 and renamed in 2012 after the War of Independence leader.

For most of its history Asteras played regional Arcadian football and won eight Arcadian championships. It then won three national divisions in three seasons: the fourth tier in 2004-05, the third tier in 2005-06 and the Second Division in 2006-07. It has played in the Super League since 2007-08. Its first European campaign came in 2012-13, and in 2013 it reached its first Greek Cup final, losing 3-1 to Olympiacos after extra time. It reached the Europa League group stage in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and it finished third in the league in 2014-15 after the play-offs.
