Overview

Atromitos in brief

Atromitos were founded on 31 May 1923 by a group of students who played football in Victoria Square in central Athens; the name means "Fearless". The club joined the Athens league in 1924 and first played at Aris Park. In the early 1930s it moved west to Peristeri and absorbed the local side Astir Peristeriou, which gave Atromitos its crest, a blue star. The colours are blue and white. Since 1953 the club has played at Peristeri Stadium, also known as the Angelos Ramfos Stadium.

As Athens champions in 1928, Atromitos finished third in the first national championship, a best league finish they matched in 2012-13. They won the second division in 1971-72, 1979-80 and 2008-09, but top-flight spells in 1972-73, 1974-77 and 1980-81 ended in relegation, and in 1997-98 the club played in the fourth tier. A 2005 merger with Chalkidona returned it to the top flight. Atromitos lost the Greek Cup finals of 2011 and 2012 to AEK Athens and Olympiacos, and in 2015-16 won a European tie for the first time, beating AIK before losing to Fenerbahce.
