Overview

Zaglebie Lubin in brief

Zaglebie Lubin are a football club from Lubin, a copper-mining town in Lower Silesia in south-western Poland. The club grew out of a team formed in 1945 by the OMTUR workers' youth organisation and was established as KS Zawisza in 1946. After rich copper deposits were found nearby in 1957, the mining industry, today KGHM Polska Miedz, became its backer, and in 1966 the club took the name Zaglebie, meaning basin, after the copper-mining region. The team wear copper, white and green, are nicknamed Miedziowi (the Coppers) and since 2009 have played at the Lubin stadium now branded KGHM Zaglebie Arena.

Zaglebie reached the Ekstraklasa for the first time in 1985 and have been Polish champions twice, in 1990-91 under Marian Putyra and in 2006-07 under Czeslaw Michniewicz. They added the Polish Super Cup in 2007, and have been Polish Cup runners-up three times, in 2005, 2006 and 2014, the last after a penalty shoot-out against Zawisza Bydgoszcz. The 1991 title led to a European Cup first-round tie with Brondby, and in 1995-96 they met AC Milan in the UEFA Cup first round. Their longest European run came in the 2016-17 Europa League qualifiers, when they beat Slavia Sofia and Partizan before losing to SonderjyskE in the third qualifying round.
