Overview

Zlín in brief

Organised football was played in Zlin from 1910, but the club dates its founding to 1919, when SK Zlin restarted after the First World War. In 1924 it came under the patronage of the Bata shoe company as SK Bata Zlin; the town's shoemaking history gives the nickname Sevci (the Cobblers). After 1948 the town became Gottwaldov, and in 1958 local clubs Jiskra and Spartak merged as TJ Gottwaldov. After sponsor names such as Tescoma and Fastav, it has been FC Zlin since July 2023. Its colours are yellow and blue; home is Stadion Letna.

Zlin first reached the national top flight in 1938 and finished third behind Sparta and Slavia in 1943 and 1944, but was demoted in 1947 for a bought result. As TJ Gottwaldov it won the 1970 Czechoslovak Cup, beating Slovan Bratislava on penalties, then was relegated in 1971. It played in the first Czech First League season, 1993-94. In 2017 it won the Czech Cup, beating Opava 1-0, reached the Europa League group stage for the first time and won the first Czech-Slovak Supercup. Relegated in 2024, it returned as 2024-25 second-tier champion.
