Overview

Wolves in brief

Founded in 1877 as St Luke's FC, Wolverhampton Wanderers took their name after merging with the football section of Blakenhall Wanderers, a cricket club, in 1879, and were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. The club have played at Molineux in Wolverhampton since 1889 and are known for old gold shirts with black shorts, the colours behind their other nickname, the Old Gold.

Wolves won three First Division titles, in 1953-54, 1957-58 and 1958-59, in the era of manager Stan Cullis and captain Billy Wright, and have also won four FA Cups, two League Cups and four Charity Shields, three of them shared. Their televised floodlit friendlies against overseas sides in the 1950s, most famously Honved, helped inspire the creation of the European Cup, and the club reached the 1972 UEFA Cup final. After falling to the Fourth Division in 1986, Wolves became the first club to win all four divisions of the English professional game.
