Overview

Burnley in brief

Founded in 1882 by members of the Burnley Rovers rugby club, Burnley were one of the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888. The Lancashire club have played at Turf Moor since 1883, and the claret-and-blue colours adopted in 1910 give them their nickname, the Clarets.

Burnley have been champions of England twice, in 1920-21 and 1959-60, and won the FA Cup in 1914, when Tommy Boyle became the first captain to receive the trophy from a reigning monarch, King George V. They are one of only five clubs to have won all four professional divisions, with second-tier titles in 1897-98, 1972-73, 2015-16 and 2022-23, the Third Division in 1981-82 and the Fourth Division in 1991-92. The club also won the Charity Shield in 1960, shared with Wolves, and in 1973.
