Overview

SV Ried in brief

SV Ried was founded on 5 May 1912 in Ried im Innkreis, a town in Upper Austria, as Sportvereinigung Ried. After the First World War the club appeared as FC Germania Ried, one of five founding members of the football association for Upper Austria and Salzburg in 1919, and it has played as SV Ried since 1920. The club colours are black and green, and the team is nicknamed the Wikinger (Vikings). Since October 2003 Ried have played at a new football-only stadium, named BWT Oberosterreichische Arena since 2025.

Ried played in Upper Austria's regional leagues until 1991 and reached the top flight in 1995 through a play-off against FC Linz. Their first major honour was the 1998 Austrian Cup, won 3-1 against Sturm Graz, and the club then reached the second round of the 1998-99 Cup Winners' Cup. Relegated in 2003, Ried returned as second-tier champions in 2005 and finished second in the Bundesliga in 2006-07, their highest league placing. A second Austrian Cup followed in 2011. Relegations in 2017 and 2023 were followed by second-tier titles in 2020 and 2025.
