Overview

Celta Vigo in brief

Founded in 1923 through the merger of Vigo Sporting and Fortuna de Vigo, Celta Vigo represent the port city of Vigo and a wider Galician identity. Known as Os Celestes for their sky-blue colours, the club have spent much of their history in Spain's top two divisions. Their home is Balaidos, opened in 1928 and closely associated with the city's football culture.

Celta have won Spain's second tier three times and lifted the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000. The late 1990s and early 2000s produced the adventurous side often called EuroCelta, shaped by Victor Fernandez and players such as Alexander Mostovoi. That period brought repeated European runs, a fourth-place league finish in 2002-03 and entry into the Champions League, establishing a reputation for technical, attacking football.
