Overview

Getafe in brief

Founded in 1983, Getafe emerged from the football tradition of the industrial city immediately south of Madrid. The club are known as the Azulones because of their deep-blue colours and built their modern identity through a rapid rise from the regional divisions. Getafe play at the Coliseum, their home since 1998 and the focal point of the club's support in the southern Madrid metropolitan area.

Getafe's only national divisional title is the 1998-99 Segunda Division B Group 1 championship, but their most prominent achievements came after reaching the top flight. Bernd Schuster's side reached the 2007 Copa del Rey final, and Michael Laudrup's team returned to the final in 2008 while also reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Those sides established a reputation for compact organisation, disciplined defending and direct counter-attacking play.
