Overview

Rayo Vallecano in brief

Founded in 1924, Rayo Vallecano represent Vallecas, a working-class district in south-eastern Madrid whose identity is inseparable from the club. The red diagonal sash gives rise to the nickname Franjirrojos, while supporters also refer to the team simply as Rayo. Home matches are played at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas, a compact municipal stadium on the site used by the club since the mid-twentieth century.

Rayo won Segunda Division in 2017-18 and have twice carried their neighbourhood identity into European competition. The 2000-01 side reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals after entering through the Fair Play route, while the 2025-26 team finished as UEFA Conference League runners-up. The adventurous, high-pressing football associated with Paco Jemez in the early 2010s also produced the club's best league finish, eighth in 2012-13.
