Werder Bremen in brief
Founded in 1899, Werder Bremen are one of northern Germany's most established football clubs and a prominent sporting institution in the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Known as Die Werderaner, a name derived from the riverside land where the club began, they play in green and white. The Weserstadion, beside the River Weser on the Osterdeich, has been Werder's permanent home since 1934.
Werder have won four Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals and the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Otto Rehhagel shaped the club's most sustained successful era, delivering two league championships, two cups and the European trophy between 1988 and 1994. Thomas Schaaf later led an attacking side to the 2004 league and cup double, built around quick combinations, adventurous full-backs and a productive partnership between midfield and attack.
