Overview

1. FC Köln in brief

Founded in 1948 through the merger of Koelner BC and Suelz 07, 1. FC Koln represent Cologne and have a particularly close identification with the city. Known as Die Geissboecke after the goat that became their mascot, they play in red and white. The club's home is the RheinEnergieStadion in Muengersdorf, built on the site of earlier municipal grounds and distinguished by four prominent corner towers.

Koln have won three German championships, including two in the Bundesliga era, and four DFB-Pokals. Their 1977-78 team completed a league and cup double under Hennes Weisweiler, combining forceful attacking play with the creativity of Heinz Flohe and the goals of Dieter Mueller. The club have also won the 2. Bundesliga five times, a record that reflects repeated recoveries after relegation.
