Overview

Udinese in brief

Udinese trace their roots to 1896 and represent Udine and the wider Friuli region in north-eastern Italy. Their black-and-white stripes inspire the nickname Le Zebrette, or the Little Zebras. The club play at the Bluenergy Stadium, the modernised Stadio Friuli opened in 1976, where the steep stands and distinctive arch have made the ground an established landmark on the city's northern edge.

Udinese's honours include two Serie B titles and a remarkable 1977-78 treble of the Serie C championship, Coppa Italia Serie C and Anglo-Italian Cup. Under Massimo Giacomini, that side completed back-to-back promotions and returned the club to Serie A in 1979. A Mitropa Cup followed in 1980, while the UEFA Intertoto Cup arrived in 2000. The presence of Zico in the 1980s gave another defining period international prominence.
