Overview

Hellas Verona in brief

Hellas Verona were founded in 1903 by students at the Liceo Scipione Maffei, a classical school in Verona. A professor suggested the name Hellas, the Greek word for Greece. Mergers with other city clubs followed in 1919 and 1929, and a 1958 takeover of A.S. Hellas brought back the Hellas Verona name. After the old company went bankrupt in 1991 the team continued as Verona FC, taking back the Hellas Verona name in 1995. The yellow and blue colours come from the city's coat of arms, and home since 1963 has been the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.

Verona's defining season was 1984-85, when Osvaldo Bagnoli's side won Serie A for the only time, clinching the title with a 1-1 draw at Atalanta on 12 May 1985. The club have also won Serie B three times, in 1956-57, 1981-82 and 1998-99, and lost Coppa Italia finals in 1976, 1983 and 1984. The 1987-88 UEFA Cup run ended in the quarter-finals against Werder Bremen. Relegation in 2026 ended a seven-season stay in Serie A.
