Overview

HNK Gorica in brief

HNK Gorica, in full Hrvatski nogometni klub Gorica, are a professional football club from Velika Gorica, the town just south of Zagreb in the Turopolje region. The club was formed on 16 July 2009 by a merger of two clubs. One was NK Radnik, the town's best-known club since 1945, which had run into serious financial trouble. The other was the more stable NK Polet from the nearby village of Busevec. The players are known as the Goricani or the Turopoljci, and home matches are played at the Gradski stadion Velika Gorica, which holds 8,000.

Gorica won the western group of the Treca HNL in their first season, 2009-10, and the Croatian Second Football League in 2010-11. They were then refused a top-flight licence. A second Druga HNL title, in 2017-18, finally brought promotion. In their first HNL season, 2018-19, they collected 59 points, regarded as the best return by a top-flight debutant, and finished fifth. Gorica have stayed in the top division ever since, finishing fifth again in 2020-21, and they reached the Croatian Football Cup semi-finals in 2020-21 and 2021-22. They have not yet won a major trophy.
