Overview

Auxerre in brief

Founded in 1905 by the priest Ernest Abbe Deschamps, AJ Auxerre grew from a Catholic youth association into one of French football's most distinctive provincial clubs. Known as Les Ajaistes, they wear blue and white and retain unusually close links between club, academy and ground. The Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps stands beside the River Yonne on land acquired by the founder.

Guy Roux guided Auxerre's climb from regional football to the top division during an extraordinary coaching tenure. His side reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1993 and won a league-and-cup double in 1996. Auxerre have four Coupe de France victories, two Ligue 2 titles and a UEFA Intertoto Cup. Their success was built on disciplined organisation, continuity and the integration of academy players.
