Overview

Celtic in brief

Celtic was constituted on 6 November 1887 at a meeting in St Mary's church hall in Calton, in the East End of Glasgow, by the Irish Marist Brother Walfrid. Its purpose was to raise money for his charity, the Poor Children's Dinner Table, and the name reflected the club's Irish and Scottish roots. Celtic played their first match on 28 May 1888, a 5-2 friendly win over Rangers. The green and white hoops date from 1903, and the club is nicknamed the Bhoys. Home is Celtic Park in Parkhead, on its present site since 1892.

Celtic won their first major honour, the Scottish Cup, in 1892 and their first league title in 1892-93. Under Jock Stein, manager from 1965, they won nine league titles in a row up to 1973-74, and in 1967 beat Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon to become the first British team to win the European Cup. They lost the 1970 European Cup final and the 2003 UEFA Cup final. In 1994 Fergus McCann took over a club close to receivership. A record 56th league title came in 2025-26, sealed by a 3-1 final-day win over Hearts.
