Overview
Rangers in brief
Rangers were founded in Glasgow in March 1872 by four teenagers, brothers Moses and Peter McNeil, Peter Campbell and William McBeath, who discussed the idea while walking through West End Park (now Kelvingrove Park). Their first match, a goalless draw with Callander, was played on Glasgow Green that May. The club later settled at Ibrox; the current Ibrox Stadium, designed by Archibald Leitch, staged its first game in December 1899. Rangers wore a lighter blue in their early decades and have worn royal blue since 1921. Fans often call the club the Gers.
Rangers were original members of the Scottish Football League and shared the first title with Dumbarton in 1890-91. They have won 55 league titles, 34 Scottish Cups and a record 28 League Cups. Bill Struth, manager from 1920 to 1954, won 18 championships, and Graeme Souness and Walter Smith led a run of nine titles in a row from 1988-89 to 1996-97. Rangers won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, beating Dynamo Moscow 3-2. After the operating company was liquidated in 2012, the club restarted in the fourth tier and returned to the top flight in 2016.

John Greig, who lifted the Cup Winners' Cup as captain, was voted the club's greatest player in 1999. Jim Baxter and Ally McCoist joined him in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, and Moses McNeil was the club's first Scotland international, in 1876. Later European runs ended in defeat in the 2008 UEFA Cup final and the 2022 Europa League final. The main rivalry is with Glasgow neighbours Celtic, together known as the Old Firm. In the 1971 Ibrox disaster, 66 people died in a stairway crush at the end of an Old Firm game.
