Overview

FC Basel in brief

FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893, three days after Roland Geldner placed a newspaper advertisement calling for a football club. Eleven men, mostly from the city's academic community, met at the Schuhmachern-Zunft restaurant and formed the club. Some founders belonged to the Basler Ruder-Club, a rowing club whose red and blue colours the new club adopted, hence the nickname "RotBlau". Basel first played at the Landhof and later at the St. Jakob Stadium, built for the 1954 World Cup. Since 2001 their home has been St. Jakob-Park, built on the same site and known locally as the "Joggeli".

Basel's first trophy was the 1933 Swiss Cup, won 4-3 against Grasshoppers. Their first league title followed in 1953 under player-coach Rene Bader. Helmut Benthaus, first as player-coach and then as coach, led the club to seven titles between 1967 and 1980. Basel were relegated in 1988 and came back up in 1994. Under Christian Gross they won the double in 2002, and they later took eight titles in a row from 2010 to 2017. Basel reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2012-13 and the Conference League semi-finals in 2022-23, and won the double again in 2024-25.
