Overview

Olympiacos in brief

Olympiacos was formed in Piraeus from a merger of local clubs and was officially recognised on 10 March 1925. Its first president was the industrialist Michalis Manouskos, and the naval officer Notis Kamperos proposed the name, inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, along with the laurel-crowned youth on the crest. Red and white were chosen as the colours. The nickname Thrylos ("Legend") became attached to the side that won six straight titles in 1954-1959. Home is the Karaiskakis Stadium at Neo Faliro, built in 1895 as a velodrome for the 1896 Olympics and rebuilt as a football-only ground in 2004.

Olympiacos have won 48 Greek championships, the first in 1930-31 and the latest in 2024-25, and a record 29 Greek Cups. They won seven league titles in a row twice, from 1996-97 to 2002-03 and from 2010-11 to 2016-17, and are one of three clubs never relegated from the Greek top flight. In Europe they reached the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in 1992-93 and the Champions League quarter-finals in 1998-99, losing to Juventus. In 2023-24 they beat Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time to win the Conference League, the only major European trophy won by a Greek club. In 2024-25, under Jose Luis Mendilibar, they won the league and cup double.
