Overview
Kalamata in brief
The club was formed in Kalamata, Messenia, in 1967, when the military junta forced the city's clubs, including Apollon Kalamata, to merge. The junta's phoenix emblem was used as the crest until it was dropped in 1974. It plays in black and white and is known as the "Black Storm" (Mavri Thyella), a name that caught on in 1971-72. Its home is the Kalamata Municipal Stadium in the Paralia district, opened in 1976. While that ground was upgraded, the club began 2026-27 playing home games elsewhere, mostly at the Neapoli Stadium in Nikaia, Attica.
Under president Lykourgos Gaitanaros, Kalamata won the second division in 1971-72 and 1973-74, but went straight back down after each top-flight season. Stavros Papadopoulos bought the club in 1992 in the third tier and took it up in 1995. The 1999-2000 season brought ninth place, a Greek Cup semi-final and a place in the 2000 Intertoto Cup, the club's only European campaign. After relegation in 2001 and the dissolution of its professional company in 2010, Kalamata fell to the Messinia regional league in 2016. It recovered, winning the Super League 2 south group in 2025-26.

Club profile maintained by Oddsivio · sourced from official club records.
Kalamata in the Papadopoulos years is credited with starting a trend among Greek clubs of signing African players. Ghanaians Samuel Johnson, Ebenezer Hagan, Derek Boateng and Peter Ofori-Quaye, sold to Olympiacos for a club-record US$3.5 million, all played there, and Greek international Nikos Liberopoulos made his name at Kalamata before joining Panathinaikos. In the 1970s, South Americans such as Elvio Mana and Sergio Espinoza strengthened the side. Bo Petersson coached the club in 1995-97. The long-standing rivals are Paniliakos of Pyrgos and Egaleo of Athens, while Messiniakos are the cross-town rivals.
