Overview

WSG Tirol in brief

WSG Tirol was founded in April 1930 in the Tyrolean town of Wattens by workers from local firms including the Swarovski crystal-cutting works and a paper mill. It played in green and white as SC Wattens, later SV Wattens, and in 1967 became WSG Swarovski Wattens, part of the Swarovski works sports club. It became WSG Swarovski Tirol in 2019 and dropped the Swarovski name in 2021. Because the club's Gernot Langes Stadion in Wattens did not meet Bundesliga requirements, its home games have been played since 2019 at the Tivoli Stadion Tirol in Innsbruck.

Wattens won the second-tier Regionalliga West in 1967-68 and spent three seasons in the top-flight Nationalliga. From 1971 to 1986 it fielded a joint team with FC Wacker Innsbruck, which won Austrian titles in 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1977, four Austrian Cups, the Mitropa Cup in 1975 and 1976, and reached the 1977-78 European Cup quarter-finals. Wattens then spent years in the second to fourth tiers until winning the 2. Liga in 2018-19, returning to the top flight on its own for the first time since 1971. It finished last in 2019-20 but stayed up when SV Mattersburg withdrew.
