Overview
Teplice in brief
FK Teplice was founded in May 1945, just after the Second World War, as SK Teplice-Sanov. Its four founders included journalist Rudolf Cajthaml and the first coach, Zdenek Steflik. The club followed on from Teplitzer FK, a club of the town's German population that ceased to exist in 1939, and at first used its old ground, U Drozdarny. After many name changes, local glassworks sponsorship brought the name Sklo Union Teplice in 1966, and the club has been FK Teplice since 1994. The players are nicknamed Sklari (the Glassmakers) and wear yellow and blue. Home is Na Stinadlech, opened on 9 May 1973 and called AGC Arena Na Stinadlech since 2016.
Teplice rose through the divisions to reach the Czechoslovak top flight in 1948 and finished third in 1952, before a reorganisation removed them from the league in 1953. After 11 seasons in the second tier they returned in 1964 and stayed until 1979, finishing third in 1970-71. A long slide ended in the third tier in 1991. They returned to the top flight in 1996 and were runners-up in 1998-99, then met Borussia Dortmund in Champions League qualifying. They won the Czech Cup in 2003 and 2009, and in the 2003-04 UEFA Cup beat Kaiserslautern and Feyenoord before losing to Celtic.
