Overview

Red Bull Salzburg in brief

Red Bull Salzburg were founded on 13 September 1933 as SV Austria Salzburg, a merger of FC Rapid Salzburg and FC Hertha Salzburg. The club was dissolved and refounded in 1950. Playing in violet and white, it later used sponsor names including SV Casino Salzburg (1978) and SV Wustenrot Salzburg (1997). Red Bull bought the club on 6 April 2005, renamed it and changed the colours to red and white; in UEFA competitions it plays as FC Salzburg. Its home since 2003 is the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim, on the edge of Salzburg.

Austria Salzburg reached the top flight in 1953 and lost Austrian Cup finals in 1974, 1980, 1981 and 2000. Under Otto Baric they won a first league title in 1993-94, the season they reached the UEFA Cup final, losing both legs 1-0 to Inter Milan; more titles followed in 1995 and 1997. The Red Bull era added 14, including ten in a row from 2014 to 2023, for 17 in all, plus nine Austrian Cups, each won as part of a double. It reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2017-18.
