Overview

Ipswich in brief

Founded in 1878, Ipswich Town represent the county town of Suffolk and are one of East Anglia's two principal professional clubs. Known as the Tractor Boys, a nickname linked to the region's agricultural character, they play in blue and white. Portman Road has been Ipswich's home since 1884 and remains closely integrated with the town centre and its railway approaches.

Ipswich won the English First Division in 1961-62 under Alf Ramsey, only one season after promotion, and lifted the FA Cup under Bobby Robson in 1978. Robson's side then won the 1981 UEFA Cup and remained a leading domestic contender for much of the period. Those teams were associated with disciplined organisation, wide attacking play and careful recruitment rather than exceptional spending.
