Overview

Valladolid in brief

Real Valladolid were founded on 20 June 1928 through the merger of Real Union Deportiva de Valladolid and Club Deportivo Espanol, and won their first match 2-1 against Alaves that September. The violet and white stripes worn since then explain the nickname Blanquivioletas, and the club are also widely known as Pucela. Since 1982 the club have played at the Estadio Municipal Jose Zorrilla, which replaced an older ground of the same name and hosted matches at the 1982 World Cup.

Valladolid's only major trophy is the 1984 Copa de la Liga, won 3-0 on aggregate against Atletico Madrid. They were Copa del Rey runners-up in 1949-50 and 1988-89, reached the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in 1989-90, losing to Monaco on penalties, and finished a best-ever fourth in La Liga in 1962-63. They have won Segunda Division three times, in 1947-48, 1958-59 and 2006-07, and were relegated from La Liga in 2025, a year after going up.
