Overview

Groningen in brief

FC Groningen were founded on 16 June 1971 in the northern Dutch city of Groningen as the successor to GVAV, a founder member of the Eredivisie in 1956. The club play in green and white, colours drawn from the city's coat of arms, and are nicknamed Trots van het Noorden, the Pride of the North. Since 2006 their home has been the Euroborg, which holds 22,550 spectators and replaced the Oosterparkstadion.

Groningen won the KNVB Cup in 2014-15, beating PEC Zwolle 2-0 in the final, having finished as runners-up in 1988-89. They won the second-tier Eerste Divisie in 1979-80 with a squad drawn largely from their own academy, and their best league finish is third, in 1990-91. Their European debut came in the 1983-84 UEFA Cup, when they knocked out Atletico Madrid in the first round.
