Overview

Heerenveen in brief

SC Heerenveen were founded on 20 July 1920 in Heerenveen, in the province of Friesland, under the name Athleta, becoming vv Heerenveen in 1922. The club is closely tied to Frisian identity: its crest is based on the flag of Friesland, and the Frisian anthem is sung before domestic matches. Home games are played at the Abe Lenstra Stadion, opened in 1994 and holding 26,100 spectators. The club's nickname is De Superfriezen.

The stadium is named after forward Abe Lenstra, whose presence helped Heerenveen win the northern district championship three times in a row during the Second World War and six more in succession afterwards. Heerenveen did not reach the Eredivisie until 1990, when they became the first Frisian club to play in it, having won the third-tier Tweede Divisie in 1969-70. They finished second in the Eredivisie in 1999-2000 and won the KNVB Cup in 2009, beating FC Twente on penalties.
