Overview

GO Ahead Eagles in brief

Go Ahead Eagles are a professional football club from Deventer, in the province of Overijssel, founded on 2 December 1902 as Be Quick. The club became Go Ahead in 1905 at the request of the Dutch football association, which wanted to avoid confusion with another club, and added Eagles in 1971 on the suggestion of coach Barry Hughes, taking the eagle from Deventer's coat of arms. The red-and-yellow side play at De Adelaarshorst, their home ground since 1920, and are widely known as Kowet, a Dutch pronunciation of Go Ahead.

Go Ahead were Dutch champions four times, in 1916-17, 1921-22, 1929-30 and 1932-33, all before the creation of the Eredivisie. Their first national cup came much later: in 2025 they won the KNVB Cup, beating AZ on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final. The club also won their section of the third-tier Tweede Divisie in 1958-59.
