Overview

Sparta Rotterdam in brief

Founded on 1 April 1888, Sparta Rotterdam are the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. The club is based in Spangen, in the west of Rotterdam, and has played since 1916 at the Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel, whose turreted facade gave the ground its name and the team its nickname, De Kasteelheren. The red-and-white striped shirts date from 1899, when the board adopted the colours of Sunderland after watching the English club.

Sparta have been Dutch champions six times. Five of those titles came in the amateur era between 1909 and 1915, and the sixth was the 1958-59 Eredivisie, which took the club into the 1959-60 European Cup. They have also won three KNVB Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1966, and the 2015-16 Eerste Divisie title. The club's first relegation of the professional era came in 2002.
