Overview

Nacional in brief

Founded in 1910, Nacional, often called Nacional da Madeira, are one of the historic football clubs of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The club began as Nacional Sport Grupo and took their present name in 1922. They play in black-and-white stripes, which gives them the nickname Alvinegros. Home matches are played at the Estadio da Madeira, widely known as the Choupana, which opened in 1999 and holds about 5,200.

Nacional's senior honours are the 2017-18 second-tier title and a third-tier Segunda Divisao B South zone title in 1999-2000, alongside eight Madeira regional championships and six regional cups. After a first top-flight spell from 1988 to 1991, a long run from 2002 to 2017 produced the club's best league finishes, fourth in 2003-04 and 2008-09, and several UEFA Cup and Europa League campaigns, including a 2009 play-off win over Zenit St Petersburg. They have also reached the Taca de Portugal semi-finals four times.
