Overview

GIL Vicente in brief

Founded in 1924, Gil Vicente are the football club of Barcelos in northern Portugal. The club take their name from the city's Theatro Gil Vicente, named after the Portuguese playwright, beside which the founders used to meet. Known as the Galos, or Roosters, and usually playing in red, they moved in 2004 from the Estadio Adelino Ribeiro Novo, their home since 1933, to the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos, which holds about 12,000.

Gil Vicente's senior honours are two second-tier titles, won in 1998-99 and 2010-11, plus three Braga regional championships. The club first reached the top flight in 1990 and recorded fifth-place finishes in 1999-2000 and 2021-22, the second of which brought a first European campaign in the Conference League. They were runners-up to Benfica in the 2012 Taca da Liga final. In 2006 the club were relegated over the fielding of an ineligible player, a dispute remembered as the Mateus case.
