Overview

Standard Liege in brief

Standard Liege are one of Belgium's most successful football clubs. They were founded in September 1898 by pupils of Liege's College Saint-Servais, who named the team after Standard Athletic Club of Paris, and in 1909 they settled in the industrial district of Sclessin. Their home, the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, is popularly known simply as Sclessin, and the red shirts give the club its nickname, Les Rouches, the Liege-accented pronunciation of rouges.

Standard have won ten Belgian league titles, eight Belgian Cups, four Belgian Super Cups and the 1975 League Cup, and after second-tier titles in 1909 and 1921 they have stayed in the top division without interruption since 1921, longer than any other Belgian side. The years from 1958 to 1971 brought six league titles and a European Cup semi-final in 1962; under Raymond Goethals the club won two more titles and reached the 1982 Cup Winners' Cup final, losing 2-1 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou. The most recent titles came in 2008 and 2009.
