Overview

Saint Etienne in brief

Saint-Etienne trace their roots to 1919, when employees of the Casino grocery chain formed the Association Sportive Casino in Saint-Etienne. The club dropped "Casino" from its name in 1920, merged with Stade Forezien Universitaire in 1927 and turned professional in 1933 as AS Saint-Etienne. Green, the main colour of the Casino group, gave the club its nickname, Les Verts. Since 1931 they have played at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, named after the Casino founder who bought the land it stands on.

Saint-Etienne have been French champions ten times, from 1956-57 to 1980-81, and have won six Coupes de France, five Trophees des Champions and the 2013 Coupe de la Ligue. They reached the 1976 European Cup final, lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich at Hampden Park despite many chances, a defeat supporters remember through the "square posts". The club have also won three second-division titles. Relegated in 2022, they returned through a play-off against Metz in 2024, then went down again in 2025.
