Overview
Aberdeen in brief
Aberdeen Football Club was formed in 1903 when three city clubs, Aberdeen, Victoria United and Orion, merged. The new club took over the old Aberdeen club's ground, Pittodrie Stadium, and played its first match there on 15 August 1903, a 1-1 draw with Stenhousemuir. Elected to the Second Division in 1904, Aberdeen joined the First Division a year later and have never been relegated from the top flight. Early black and gold stripes earned the nickname "the Wasps"; red and white arrived in 1939. The team are best known as "the Dons".
Aberdeen's first major trophy was the 1947 Scottish Cup under Dave Halliday, whose side also won the first league title in 1954-55. The peak came under Alex Ferguson (1978-1986): league titles in 1979-80, 1983-84 and 1984-85, four Scottish Cups, and in 1983 the European Cup Winners' Cup, won 2-1 after extra time against Real Madrid, plus the European Super Cup against Hamburger SV. That made them the only Scottish team to have won two European trophies. In 2025 they beat Celtic on penalties to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years.

Ferguson's side was built around goalkeeper Jim Leighton, defenders Willie Miller and Alex McLeish and midfielder Gordon Strachan; John Hewitt scored the winner against Bayern Munich on the way to the 1983 final. Joe Harper and Eoin Jess were also picked when fans voted for the club's greatest team in 2015. Former player and trainer Donald Colman is credited with inventing the dug-out at Pittodrie. With no close neighbours at the same level, Aberdeen's main rivals are more distant: Dundee United, with whom they were called the "New Firm" in the 1980s, and Rangers.
