Overview

Brøndby in brief

Brondby IF (Brondbyernes Idraetsforening) was formed on 3 December 1964 in the western suburbs of Copenhagen. It came from a merger of two local clubs, Brondbyoster IF, founded in 1928, and Brondbyvester IF, founded in 1909. The merger was a condition for Brondby Municipality building a new ground, and the club began playing at Brondby Stadion in 1965. It started out as amateurs in the sixth tier. It plays in blue and yellow and is nicknamed "Drengene fra Vestegnen" (the boys from Vestegnen, the western suburbs). Fans often call the stadium, rebuilt in 2000, Vilfort Park, after Kim Vilfort.

Brondby were promoted to the top-flight 1st Division in 1981 and won their first Danish title in 1985. They have won 11 national titles from 1985 to 2021 and seven Danish Cups from 1989 to 2018, with doubles in 1998 and 2005. In Europe they reached the European Cup quarter-finals in 1986-87. They also reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1990-91, where an 88th-minute goal for Roma knocked them out. A failed takeover of Interbank in 1992 left the club close to financial collapse. Three titles in a row followed from 1996, and the 2021 title was their first in 16 years.
