Overview

Austria Vienna in brief

Austria Vienna trace their roots to October 1910, when former players of the Vienna Cricket and Football-Club set up the Wiener Amateur-Sportverein at a meeting chaired by Erwin Muller. Readmitted to the Austrian football association on 15 March 1911, the club gives 1911 as its founding year. It became FK Austria in November 1926, after the switch to professionalism. Violet is the club colour, hence the nickname Die Veilchen. Since 1973 the team has played at the Franz Horr Stadium in Favoriten, called the Generali Arena since a naming-rights deal at the end of 2010.

Austria have won 24 Austrian league titles, from 1923-24 to 2012-13, and a record 27 Austrian Cups, the latest in 2008-09. The side built around Matthias Sindelar won the Mitropa Cup in 1933 and 1936. Eight league titles came between 1975-76 and 1985-86, when the club also reached the 1978 Cup Winners' Cup final, lost 4-0 to Anderlecht, and the 1978-79 European Cup semi-finals. Three straight titles followed in 1991-1993. In 2013-14 Austria reached the Champions League group stage for the first time. Like Rapid, they have never been relegated.
