Overview
Viking in brief
Viking, often called Viking Stavanger outside Norway, are a football club from Stavanger on the country's south-west coast. The club was founded on 10 August 1899 as Idraetsklubben Viking and played at Stavanger Stadion until 2004, when it moved to a new ground at Jattavagen. Opened on 1 May 2004 as Viking Stadion, the ground was renamed SR-Bank Arena in April 2018 and since January 2025 has carried the sponsor name Lyse Arena. The first kit was all white, but the club switched to dark blue shirts, which give it the nickname De Morkebla (The Dark Blues).
Viking have won nine Norwegian league titles and six Norwegian Football Cups, and have played more top-flight league matches than any other Norwegian club, dropping out only for 1966-67, 1987-88 and 2018. The 1950s brought cups in 1953 and 1959 and the 1957-58 title; the 1970s four straight titles from 1972 to 1975 and a league and cup double in 1979. Titles followed in 1982 and 1991, and cups in 1989, 2001 and 2019. In 2025 Viking won the Eliteserien by a point from Bodo/Glimt, their first title in 34 years. In Europe they knocked Sporting CP and Chelsea out of the UEFA Cup and reached the 2026-27 Champions League league phase.
