Overview

Dundee United in brief

Dundee United were formed in Dundee in 1909 as Dundee Hibernian, with Pat Reilly as first manager, and wore the traditionally Irish colours of green and white. They have played at Tannadice Park, previously Clepington Park, from the start and joined the Scottish Football League in 1910. Saved from going out of business in 1923, the club became Dundee United to widen its appeal. Tangerine shirts, first worn when the team played as Dallas Tornado in 1967, were adopted in 1969. Since 2024 the ground has been called the CalForth Construction Arena at Tannadice Park.

United won the Second Division in 1925 and 1929, and after promotion under Jerry Kerr in 1960 stayed in the top flight until 1995. Their European debut in 1966-67 brought a win over Fairs Cup holders Barcelona. Under Jim McLean (1971-1993) they won the League Cup in 1979 and 1980 and the Premier Division in 1982-83, reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1984 and lost the 1987 UEFA Cup final to IFK Gothenburg. Scottish Cups followed in 1994 and 2010. Relegated in 2016 and 2023, they returned as second-tier champions in 2020 and 2024.
