Overview

Silkeborg in brief

Silkeborg IF (Silkeborg Idraetsforening, usually shortened to SIF) was founded on 26 April 1917 in Silkeborg, in central Jutland. For decades the football team played in the Jutland regional leagues. It made a short visit to the third division in 1962 and was promoted to the 2nd Division in 1966. In 1982 a professional company was set up to run the football side, and in 1987 the club reached the top flight for the first time. Nicknamed De Rode (The Reds), SIF played at Silkeborg Stadion until the 10,000-capacity JYSK Park opened in 2017.

Silkeborg won the Danish championship in 1993-94 under Swedish coach Bo Johansson. They decided the title on the final day, beating AaB 2-0 while Copenhagen lost at OB. They were runners-up in 1997-98, were one of the three winners of the 1996 UEFA Intertoto Cup, and beat AB 4-1 in the 2001 Danish Cup final. Relegations followed in 2003 and 2007, and after 2013 the club went up and down several times. Back in the Superliga from 2021, they finished third in 2021-22, played in the 2022-23 Conference League group stage and won the 2024 Danish Cup, beating AGF 1-0.
