Overview
Baník Ostrava in brief
Banik Ostrava was founded on 8 September 1922 as SK Slezska Ostrava, when 20 people, mostly poor coal miners from the Kamenec mining settlement, signed the founding document in the U Dubu restaurant in Slezska Ostrava. The name Banik, part of the club's name since 1952, comes from the Slovak word for a miner. The traditional colours, white shirts and blue shorts, date from April 1923. After grounds at Kamenec, Stara strelnice and, from 1959 to 2015, Bazaly, the club moved to the Mestsky stadion in Ostrava-Vitkovice in 2015.
Banik first reached the Czechoslovak top flight in 1937. Relegated in 1966, they won the second division at the first attempt. Their golden era brought Czechoslovak titles in 1975-76, 1979-80 and 1980-81 and Czechoslovak Cups in 1973 and 1978. In Europe they reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1974-75, the Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in 1978-79 and the European Cup quarter-finals in 1980-81. Later came the 1989 Mitropa Cup, the 1991 Czechoslovak Cup, the 2003-04 Czech title and the 2005 Czech Cup. Relegated in 2016, they returned in 2017.
