FC Midtjylland

FC Midtjylland was formed in 1999 in western Jutland as a merger of two long-time local rivals, Herning Fremad (founded 1918) and Ikast FS (founded 1935). The merger was driven by Johnny Rune, a carpenter and wood-supply businessman, and Steen Hessel, a Mercedes-Benz dealer, and the deal was announced in April 1999 after at least ten years of failed talks. The club plays in red and black. Since 2004 its home has been MCH Arena in Herning, first called SAS Arena; Midtjylland was the first Danish club to sell stadium naming rights.

Midtjylland won the 1st Division in their first season, 1999-2000, and have played in the Superliga since. After Matthew Benham became majority shareholder in 2014, they won their first Danish title in 2014-15, then further titles in 2017-18, 2019-20 and 2023-24. They won the Danish Cup in 2019, 2022 and 2026, the last with a 1-0 final win over FC Copenhagen. In Europe they beat Manchester United 2-1 at home in 2016, reached the Champions League group stage in 2020-21, and lost on penalties to Nottingham Forest in the 2025-26 Europa League round of 16.
