Overview
Dinamo Zagreb in brief
Dinamo Zagreb are the most successful club in Croatian football since independence. The club was founded in June 1945 in Zagreb, after the new communist authorities disbanded the city's leading pre-war clubs, among them Gradjanski, and took a name in the style of the Dynamo sports societies of the Eastern Bloc. Since 2011 the club has also claimed continuity with Gradjanski, founded in 1911, a view that remains disputed. Renamed HASK Gradjanski in 1991 and Croatia Zagreb in 1993, it returned to the Dinamo name in 2000. The team wear blue and white, are nicknamed Modri (the Blues) and play at Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb.
In the Yugoslav era Dinamo won four Yugoslav First League titles, in 1948, 1954, 1958 and 1982, as well as several Yugoslav Cups. In Europe they lost the 1963 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final to Valencia and won the competition in 1967, beating Leeds United in the final. Since 1992 they have won 26 Croatian First Football League titles, the latest in 2026, along with 18 Croatian Football Cups, most recently in 2024 and in 2026, when they beat Rijeka in the final in Osijek, and eight Croatian Super Cups. They have reached the Champions League group stage or league phase several times, and the Europa League quarter-finals in 2021.

Dinamo's main rivalry is the Eternal Derby (Vjecni derbi) with Hajduk Split, which sets Zagreb against Split and is played between the country's two most successful clubs; the clubs also meet regularly in cup finals and the Super Cup. In the Yugoslav era the sharpest antagonism was with Red Star Belgrade, and the abandoned match at Maksimir on 13 May 1990 became a symbol of the tensions that preceded Croatian independence. Famous former players include Slaven Zambata, Zvonimir Boban, Davor Suker and Luka Modric, a product of the club's academy, while Miroslav Blazevic coached the side to the 1982 Yugoslav title.
