Overview

Clermont Foot in brief

Clermont Foot trace their roots to Stade Clermontois, which merged with AS Montferrand in 1984 to form Clermont-Ferrand Football Club. After that club went bankrupt, the present club was founded in June 1990 as Clermont Foot, became Clermont Foot Auvergne in 1997 and took its current name, Clermont Foot 63, in 2013. They play in red and blue at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied, opened in December 1995 and named after the city's mayor from 1944 to 1973.

In 1997, while still a fourth-tier side, Clermont reached the Coupe de France quarter-finals after beating Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. Championnat National titles in 2001-02 and 2006-07 each brought promotion to Ligue 2, the second after relegation in 2006, and second place in 2020-21 brought the club's first promotion to the top flight. They finished eighth in Ligue 1 in 2022-23, their best placing, before relegation back to Ligue 2 in 2024.
