Overview

Aarhus in brief

AGF, short for Aarhus Gymnastikforening (Aarhus Gymnastic Union), was founded in Aarhus on 26 September 1880 as a gymnastics and fencing club. Its football department followed in 1902, won the Jutland championship in 1908 and joined the new national league in 1927. From 1920 the team played at Aarhus Stadium, called Ceres Park since 2015. While a new stadium is built on that site, AGF have played home league games since February 2025 at the temporary Ceres Park Vejlby in northern Aarhus, and European home games at Randers' Cepheus Park.

AGF won three straight Danish titles from 1954-55 to 1956-57, another in 1960, and five Danish Cups between 1955 and 1965, starting with the first final in 1955. They reached the European Cup quarter-finals in 1960-61, losing to eventual winners Benfica. A fifth title came in 1986, followed by cups in 1987, 1988, 1992 and 1996, and a Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final against Barcelona in 1988-89. Relegations came in 1968, 1973, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2013-14. A 2-0 win at Brondby on 10 May 2026 sealed a sixth title, the first in 40 years.
