Overview

FC Luzern in brief

FC Luzern was founded in Lucerne on 12 August 1901, after friends Adolf Coulin, Ernst Haag and Hans Walter, who had come to know football in French-speaking Switzerland, met other enthusiasts that July; an earlier attempt in 1897 drew little response. The blue and white colours come from the coats of arms of the city and canton of Lucerne. The club played at Stadion Allmend from 1934 and opened a new stadium on the same site in 2011. Known as the Swissporarena until mid-2026, it has been called Thermoplan Arena since 1 July 2026.

Luzern won its only Swiss championship in 1988-89 under German coach Friedel Rausch, sealing it with a 1-0 home win over Servette through a goal by Jurgen Mohr. It has won the Swiss Cup three times, in 1960, 1992 and 2021, the last with a 3-1 final win over St. Gallen; the 1992 cup came days after a relegation. Luzern has made 17 moves up or down from the top flight since 1933, nine promotions and eight relegations. It fell to the second tier in 2003 and returned as Challenge League winners in 2006.
